The Trinary Structure

  1. Distinguished-1: One side of the distinction
  2. Distinguished-2: The other side
  3. The distinguisher: Whatever occupies the registering role

Whether the distinguisher is "consciousness" in a metaphysical sense is the optional C0 fork, not a forced conclusion.

Why 1 + 1 = 3

Most people see two things: "I" and "my experience." The model proposes a third: the observer-role that registers both. This trinary structure is a model — whether it's always present or always structured this way remains open (ε > 0).

The model proposes that distinguishing two things involves a third — the distinguishing process itself. This is a structural observation. Calling it "consciousness" and treating it as "the fundamental condition for experience" is the stronger C0 claim, not a direct consequence of the trinary model.

  3. Consciousness (the field in which relating can occur)

Why Binary Feels Natural

Binary Mode (The Default)

Most people naturally see pairs: self vs. experience, subject vs. object, me vs. world. The model proposes that both sides of any pair involve a third — the registering role. Whether this means "consciousness is the field" or something more modest is the C0 question.

The Proposed Third

The third element in the model is easy to miss because it's what's doing the looking. Learning to notice the observer-role (whatever it is) is the practical skill this lesson trains, regardless of how you label it metaphysically.
